Life on the Emerald Coast

A local's guide to the life waiting on the other side of your move. The beaches, schools, game days and everyday places that make Destin, 30A, Niceville and Freeport feel like home, from a family who lives it.

WHY I LOVE LIVING HERE

The first place that finally felt like home

After 15 years of military moves, the Emerald Coast is where we finally unpacked every last box.
It's the emerald water and sugar-white sand, sunsets over the bay and beach days that don't require a vacation. It's bike rides down 30A, boat days in Destin and friendly faces on the sidelines in Niceville. It's small-town community with the Gulf right down the road.
Picture your own family here. The walk to the beach after dinner, the Friday night games, the holiday lights at the harbor. I'm so glad you're here.
THE TOWNS

Find the town that feels like your family

Every town along the Emerald Coast has its own personality, from Destin's harbor and 30A's beach towns to Niceville's bayside neighborhoods and Freeport's newer communities. Not sure where your family fits? My relocation guide breaks them down side by side, with the vibe, the price points and who tends to love each one.
EDUCATION

Schools on the Emerald Coast

The area spans three counties and three school districts, so the county line matters when you're choosing a home. The good news? All three districts earned an A from the state for 2025-26. Tap through to Niche for school-by-school ratings and reviews.
Okaloosa County Schools
Serving Destin, Niceville, Valparaiso, Fort Walton Beach and Crestview. One of only three Florida districts to earn an A every year since 2014.
Walton County Schools
Serving 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, Miramar Beach and Freeport. An A district for nine straight years, tied for #2 of Florida's 67 districts, with no schools rated C for 2025-26.
Santa Rosa County Schools
Serving Navarre, Gulf Breeze, Milton and Pace, a favorite for families stationed at Hurlburt Field, NAS Whiting Field and NAS Pensacola. An A district for 2025-26.
School research is built into every move I guide, from your commute to the questions to ask on a tour. School zones can change, so I'll help you confirm the assignment for any home you're considering.
YOUTH SPORTS

Game days and sideline seats

From Friday night lights to lacrosse on the bay, there's something for every kid, every season. Plugging into a team is one of the fastest ways for your kids to make friends and for you to meet other parents. Here's where local families sign up.
Playing at a travel level in baseball, softball, lacrosse or soccer? Let me know. I'm happy to point you toward the right club for your kid.
Niceville Football Little League: tackle for ages 5 to 12, plus Niceville Flag Football for ages 6 to 13. City of Destin: tackle and flag in the fall. South Walton Youth Football Association (the Seahawks): tackle and cheer for ages 5 to 12 in Santa Rosa Beach. Freeport Youth Football: the Bulldogs, for families in Freeport. Gulf Breeze: youth leagues through Gulf Breeze Parks and Recreation, feeding a strong high school program.
FEATURED LOCAL SPOT

North Beach Social

“My favorite place to take the kids. Toes in the sand, a great meal and a bay sunset.”

Crab cakes, salmon and cocktails on a table beneath the North Beach sign and surfboard at North Beach Social
A beach bar and restaurant right on the bay in Santa Rosa Beach, with a wide stretch of white sand where the kids can play while you settle in. Think beach games, live music, family movie nights by the dock and some of the prettiest sunsets on the Emerald Coast.
Where to find it: 24200 Hwy 331 S in Santa Rosa Beach, at the foot of the 331 bridge, beneath Farm & Fire.
Good to know: it's open daily for lunch and dinner, and well-behaved pups are welcome too.
